Cancer Networks are required by the Manual of Cancer Services (2004) to have a Network agreed programme of
training for the administration of chemotherapy.
The Yorkshire Cancer Network Chemotherapy Education Group is made up of nursing and
educational/ training representatives from acute Trusts, Primary Care Trusts and Universities
across the YCN. This group has developed a chemotherapy education programme which meets
national requirements and is made up of:
The programme is applicable to:
- Nursing staff who are not educated to degree level in the administration of chemotherapy
- Nursing staff in Acute and Primary Care Trusts
- Medical staff who are working in areas where intravenous chemotherapy administration is routine and
where they may be required to assist in the management of complications of chemotherapy administration
- The aim of this programme is to standardise and share good practice across the YCN, ensuring all staff involved in
the administration of chemotherapy attain an agreed minimum safe standard of practice. It is anticipated that
incorporation of this programme into Acute and Primary Care Trusts will allow staff to move between
organisations in the YCN without the need for automatic reassessment of chemotherapy administration skills.

should be implemented in practice can be found by clicking
