District Nurse Project

Welcome to the District Nurse Palliative Care Education Project website.

Ongoing evaluation of the Yorkshire Cancer Network's District Nurse Palliative Care Education Programme clearly highlights that district nurses' inter-professional working has improved and palliative care knowledge has increased. Nurses state they have gained enthusiasm, motivation and confidence from the education programme delivered.

17 PCTs have been targeted over a three year period and the Palliative Care Education Facilitators have now completed the programme. There has been almost 100% take up of places with over 500 district nurses attending the programme.

The Education Facilitators developed a self-assessment competency document based on the GSF and LICP. The competency document identifies education needs, which influences the content of the individualised programme, making sessions relevant to each group of nurses.

Without exception, identified education in each PCT has included palliative care / oncological emergencies. Other areas included breathlessness, depression, bereavement and spirituality.

As a result of the programme, Palliative Care Link Nurse Groups have been developed to enable local networking and maintain the motivation gained and some PCTs have invited members of the group to present at PEC meetings.
